THE PARADIGM
An Intentional Choice
Susan's work introduces a powerful lens for understanding what happens after betrayal — and what becomes possible when we choose growth over survival.

THE TRAP
The Survival Cycle
Without awareness, accountability, and self-forgiveness, the cycle continues. We repeatedly relive the same loop — until we choose a different path.
01
React
Scammers create elaborate backstories to appear real and relatable. Family details, bank access, mailed items, these are deliberate proof points to build credibility. Family equals trustworthiness. Bank accounts equal legitimacy.
02
Ignore – Denial
Denial occurs when we avoid difficult truths or refuse to examine our role in what happened. We may push away uncomfortable emotions, minimize warning signs, or avoid self-reflection. Although denial can feel protective in the short term, it often delays healing.
03
Blame – Rationalize
When blame takes hold, growth becomes difficult. Energy is spent justifying, rationalizing, or focusing on the faults of others rather than seeking understanding. The result is often a repeated cycle of frustration, resentment, and feeling powerless to change.
04
Resist
Resistance appears when we hold tightly to pain, regret, anger, or shame. Rather than seeking growth, the focus remains on protecting ourselves from discomfort. This can create an ongoing struggle that keeps us stuck in survival rather than moving toward healing.
05
Hide – Shame
Shame convinces us to withdraw, hide, and believe we are defined by what happened. Over time, shame can diminish confidence, damage relationships, and prevent us from recognizing our value and purpose. The light we are capable of sharing becomes hidden behind fear and self-judgment.
And the cycle repeats...
Healing Begins With an Intentional Choice
The Survival Cycle is not a life sentence. It is a pattern — and patterns can be broken. The moment we choose awareness over avoidance, accountability over blame, and compassion over shame, we step onto a different path. One that leads not just to recovery, but to renewal.
THE PATH FORWARD
The Growth Paradigm
Six steps that transform betrayal into a foundation for purpose, resilience, and a life reclaimed.
1
STEP
Recognition
Every healing journey begins with awareness. Recognition is the moment we begin to understand the impact of the experience and acknowledge the emotions that accompany it. You may feel: The initial shock of an event often brings fear, anger, confusion, regret, and self-doubt. Questions naturally arise: Why did this happen? How did it happen? How did it happen to ME? What you can do: Begin to face the reality of what has happened, chronicling as honestly as possible the events that occurred. Understanding the impact of the experience and acknowledging the emotions that accompany it are critical first steps on your journey to healing.
2
STEP
Ownership
Ownership is where healing gains momentum. This step involves exploring patterns, needs, blind spots, or vulnerabilities that may have influenced the situation.
You may feel: A rising awareness of the role you may have played in the situation brings disappointment, but also the courage to begin exploring the personal traits and behaviors that contributed to the betrayal. It is an honest debrief of what role you may have played. What you can do: Review the experience in detail, with an eye toward blind spots, mistakes in judgment or poor decisions made by you due to vulnerability or hidden needs.
Peel back the onion as honestly as possible. ( For most people peeling an onion bring tears, this is ok and understandable). By accepting responsibility for our choices we can open the door to growth, healing, and a new path forward. We relinquish the shame that can hold us back from essential healing.
3
STEP
Learning
Learning requires desire, curiosity, reflection, and courage. It is a critical step toward re-establishing confidence and trust in yourself, as you review and understand the “how” of what happened and how it can be avoided in your future decisions and actions. This step transforms painful experiences into valuable wisdom that can guide future decisions and positive change.
You may feel: As understanding grows, we begin identifying lessons, creating perspective and taking meaningful action. Self-confidence and self-trust begin to return, and positive thoughts begin to take hold. You feel a new optimism about your possibilities.
What you can do: Open yourself to acceptance and acknowledgement that the past is behind you. Actively embrace your new and deeper perspectives about yourself and your life, and begin to anticipate your thriving future.
4
STEP
Renewal
Renewal is where possibility returns. New meaning begins to emerge from the difficult experiences, and purpose starts to replace pain. Gratitude, hope and personal growth become daily practices. You may feel: As your outlook improves and your sense of self increases, you feel the stirrings of joy and hope. The darkness is lifting and is being replaced with light and a belief that you are recovering yourself and re-establishing your life.
What you can do: Set goals and begin to proactively create daily practices and activities that support and develop these life objectives. Intentionally create something positive from what once felt overwhelming by owning your thoughts and actions. Create a positive vision of your daily life going forward.
5
STEP
Self-Forgiveness
Self-forgiveness is one of the most powerful, and most difficult, steps in healing. It involves understanding our humanity, acknowledging mistakes, and recognizing both what was within our control and what was not. Forgiveness allows us to release shame, regret, reclaim our dignity, and move forward with self-compassion.
You may feel: It may be difficult at first to surrender yourself to forgiveness. As you consider your situation and begin forgiving yourself, you may feel lighter. As you move from the garden of shame tangled in the weeds of regret, you unburden your heart. You begin to enjoy yourself again.
What you can do: Treat yourself as you would treat a dear friend, with compassion and forgiveness. View your experience, decisions and actions from this perspective. Work through your emotions, realizing that you have done nothing “wrong.” Rather, you were enmeshed in a difficult situation with dishonest, dishonorable and manipulative individuals.
6
STEP
Focus
Focus keeps us moving forward. By defining our purpose, contributions, and direction, we create a meaningful vision for the future. With each step forward, we grow in awareness, confidence, and purpose, bringing light not only to our own lives but to those around us.
You may feel: It’s exciting to be “back in action,” and you may find yourself planning and anticipating future activities and results with joy. As you move forward with purpose, you will find that you are finally becoming yourself again!
What you can do: Begin intentionally thinking about your life, your goals and your vision for your own future. Assess your strengths and abilities to develop your purpose, potential contributions and direction. Move forward with intention and your new-found confidence. Do not let anyone judge you. Remain focused on the life you want and deserve. Do not let doubt and distractions veer you off course.
The future is yours and the sky’s the limit!
